2003 June Bug Regatta
Sunday: Race 2, part 5

And there goes Peter (286), parlaying the inside overlap into a lead onto the final short beat to the finish line.
..
Jens (r) comes in towards a first-place finish on the port layline ahead of Peter (286), Len (6732) and Bob (3571).

The designer of the new Sonatina was there ...
..
... to promote his craft.
..
Jens and Sharon Biskaborn get set to cross the line ahead of Laser winner, Steve Carroll (W6066).
..
The gun goes and it's another Sunday first for the Biskaborns. Well done!!
Note the fine boat and sail trim: boat flat, weight close together amidships, etc.

..
Just a hundred metres or so from the finish, Len and Andy (6732) move into second place when they starboard Peter (286). But, as Yogi Berra famously said: "It ain't over 'til it's over." With apologies to Len, the following sequence of photos documents how quickly these things can change in a race!
..
Presumably to avoid getting trapped to leeward of Len and being unable to tack for the finish line,
Peter (286) crosses behind Len ...

..
... and tacks to windward and astern where ...
..
... Len (6732) should be able to "kill" both Peter (286) and Bob (3571) with backwind off his main ...
..
... Peter is doing to Bob above.  Since everyone is laying the finish line with ease, there is no real need to pinch anyone off since it's a "foot race" towards the line - although the pin end is radically favoured and it will pay to finish near the pin.
..
Len chooses to pinch up and reaches the perfect lee bow position on Peter. Unfortunately, Len has sacrificed much of his speed to get up beside Peter and now has back wind from Y1760 to contend with. At this point, Len must ease his sails and bear off a bit to get his speed back or ...
..
... Peter (286) will pass him just 30 yards from the finish.
..
Can it get worse for Len? You betcha! While Len is still virtually dead in the water (note the lack of wake!),
Bob (3571) cleverly realizes that the only way through is to leeward.

..
Even though this puts Bob almost directly into Peter's wind shadow, Bob gets enough wind to ...
..
... snatch 3rd place and consign Len to 4th.
..
One last obstacle to a 3rd place for Bob: He is sailing almost parallel to the finish line and wants to tack to cross the line. Can he cross Len who will have starboard? Even if Bob gets the finish beep before fouling Len, Bob is still subject to the Rules of Part 2 until he clears the finish line completely.
..
A nice, crisp tack propels Bob and Ravi across the line in 3rd, just nicely clear of Len (6732).
