2003 June Bug Regatta
Sunday: Race 1, part 2

..
Doug MacKenzie completes a nice first beat as he shaves Mark A and starts a broad reach/run down to #4 off the beach.
..
Nearing Mark A, Peter (286) is holding his lead nicely over Jens (7663),
while Steve Carroll (W6066 sailing Laser 156896) duels it out with Brad Biskaborn (61007).
..
Peter prepares to ...
..
... make a short hitch on starboard to reach Mark A. Note how Peter avoids tacking directly on
Steve's wind, a small gesture of consideration that will be repaid moments later ...

..
... the "live and let live" philosophy is again illustrated as Steve Carroll
does not hold starboard past the mark
to try to make Peter tack twice more ...
..
... but rather tacks right at the mark ...
..
... and lets Peter follow him closely around the mark.
..
With the wind funnelling nicely along the shore (where the photographer is standing on the cliff), it might have paid Peter to sail a bit high around the mark to stay out of disturbed wind and water - at least until the spi is up and drawing. Note how Jens (7663) has closed the gap on Peter who of course is going far slower now that he's on a run! Brad (61007) gets set to pursue Steve Carroll, the leading Laser.
..
As Peter coaches Krista through the spi hoist routine aboard, Bob (3571) and Len (6732) zero in on Mark A. Crews take note: 286 is a good illustration of why helms want crews to "hurry up" while the helm steers with his knees. The weight is too far aft and the transom drags in the water with the helm in this position, so that every second the crew can shave off the routine is distance gained!!
..
Only a couple of lengths behind Peter now is Jens and you can see that the other two W's
are within striking distance as well. A great, close race for us spectators!!
..
A nice, quick spi hoist and now Peter is flying the spi until Krista is ready to take over. She needs to hurry though, since every second that Peter has to stand back there and steer with his knees is a slow second since the transom is dragging from having the weight too far aft.
..
The 7663 hoist: Jens cleats the halyard as Sharon sets the pole.
..
Close behind Peter and Jens are Bob Kennedy with Ravi Gupta (3571) and
Len Macdougall with Andy Turnbull (6732) who have a nice puff with which to begin their run.

..
The Biskaborns (7663) get the puff first and more of it as it funnels along the cliff while the Rahns (black hull) have yet to feel its effects. Note the fine form displayed by Brad Biskaborn in his Laser with the windward heel to eliminate weather helm by moving the centre of effort inboard and closer to the centre of resistance.
..
By the time Peter (286) finally gets the puff, Jens (7663) has taken the lead.
..
Ravi (l) and Bob begin their spinnaker hoist ...
..
... closely pursued by Andy (l) and Len.
..
It's a closely bunched fleet. Note that Peter (286) has finally decided to sail a bit higher into the puff.
Bob (3571) meanwhile, could probably hoist his spinnaker a bit higher.

..
Sharon and Jens truck right along as they get set to pass the starting area and the RC boat.
