Outer Banks - 1

Having moved into our room in Nags Head and taken a quick walk across the beach below it to touch the Atlantic, we rushed off to see what the rest of the Outer Banks had to offer. It was only early afternoon, so we figured we could take our time. We had been thinking about taking a ferry or two and continuing the scenic route via Hwy 12 and Cedar Island, but the ferries were closed for the season except by special, expensive arrangement. So we decided to drive as far as we could - to the town of Hatteras.
..
Our first stop was the Bodie Island lighthouse - just south of Nags Head.
..
An interesting-looking place although...
..
... we didn't feel we had time for the tour!
..
Looking eastward toward Pamlico Sound ...
..
... from the lighthouse grounds.
..
Continuing south, we saw the famous dunes - with the Atlantic on the other side.
..
a line of poles as far as the eye could see
..
The locals delighted in telling us they had had a foot of snow less than a week earlier
- a real rarity! Several days later, the evidence was still to be seen.

..
After about an hour's drive, we reached the (in)famous Cape Hatteras.
..
Marc was eager to see live the recently moved Cape Hatteras lighthouse. On their web site, he had seen pictures of the
lighthouse being moved - standing up!!!! - a couple of hundred yards further from the slowly eroding shoreline.

..
This ring of stone blocks with the lighthouse keepers' names now marks the old location.
..
Al, on the other hand, was dying to see the infamous Cape Hatteras itself -
..
- the place where two titanic forces, the Gulf Stream and the North Atlantic Current collide.
..
This was it, the actual Cape Hatteras - I think. In an offshore breeze, it seemed pretty benign, but it wasn't hard to imagine
an onshore gale creating some of the worlds most dangerous waves and sailing waters where the currents fight it out.

..
Another quick glance at the "new" lighthouse...
... and this impressive shore, and we were off ...
... into the town of Hatteras itself where we hoped to find a beer with an ocean view.
..
This bar would have been pretty ideal - with its view across Pamlico Sound
to the west, but it was obviously abandoned for the season!

..
One more look onto Pamlico Sound from the abandoned terrace, and then we continued our bar search. We went as far south as we could,
confirmed the complete absence of running ferries and finally found a beer in a local hang-out where the waitress was the best view.
