Friday 7 February 2003: pre-race - 3
..
The RC Boat gets ready to set the line - a slight postponement to wait for the wind to settle in. This pleases Marc and Al who had seen Nick before leaving but Al was the only one that gave Frank a chance to make it in time for race 1! But then, Al knows that Frank has made the 5-hour Ottawa-Toronto trip in 3.5 hours!! Meanwhile Mike Murto (2945) still looks like an illustration for perfect light air trim. Ellen and Charlie (3951) on the other hand are still in cruising mode, sitting way too far aft - note how this stern-heavy boat angle is reflected in the aft angle of the mast. C Scow KC 88 (Mike Von Godanyi and John Matthews) must be well off to windward, judging by the fact their sail is really twice the size of a W main!
..
Jim and Wayne will also want to sit further forward once into race mode. In these winds, the crew wants
to be up against the shroud (sidestay) and the helm wants his forward knee right up against the thwart.

..
Mike Murto meets Richard and Michele. Quick! Who's on starboard?
..
Jim Peterson and Chris Wickham enjoy a nice puff. Word is that these boats have double centreboards
- angled outwards when down, one per side - and sail upwind best at this kind of angle.

..
And there they go! Note the interesting boom vang arrangement with the lower end mobile on a track.
..
Jim and Wayne enjoying the puff...
..
... as well!
..
Bob Hart zips along single-handed ...
..
... but later decides not to race on the Friday.
..
Two single-handers, desperate for human contact!
..
Gale and Don check out the wind conditions.
..
The two North Carolina W's tune up together. A puff has just hit,
catching Wayne inboard, and Richard with his main slightly undervanged.

..
Wayne makes for the high side while Richard (10139) admires the excessive twist in his main.
Al's note: no chance to criticize Al in these photos as he cleverly had the camera aboard SHADES!!!

..
Another puff hits. When you're on the low side as Richard is, ragging the main is the best solution - lack of vang reflected in the very floppy leech! More vang would be good aboard 10302, also - this would give the sail a more consistent angle of attack and flatten the main by bending the mast, which in turn would make the boat easier to hike flat!
..
The start line has been set and the competitors gather ...
..
... to check it out.
