Thursday 6 February 2003: Back to Lake Eustis
..
The next morning, we said good-bye to Lee and presented him with a longer, thinner mainsheet to remember us by during his voyages. He has since tried it out and likes it better. So now it was time to get back to Lake Eustis and think racing!
..
Marc suggested the scenic route - north up Merritt Island via Cape Canaveral and the Kennedy Space Centre. We promptly got lost and ended up at a barricaded entry point with obviously restricted access - possibly due to the investigation regarding the Shuttle. Marc and I were pleasantly surprised at how friendly the well armed guard was, as he re-directed us.
..
Another guy who likes his naps - fortunately across a narrow canal from where we were on Merritt Island!!
..
By early afternoon, we were back at the Lake Eustis Sailing Club and got to admire
their beautiful, new, almost completed clubhouse in daylight for the first time.

..
Ed Kraft (r) was busy washing his W at the club, but we felt that for SHADES' masses of road dirt ...
..
... sterner measures were called for!
..
With our boat washed and more or less rigged (r), we could just lounge around, and watch ...
..
... the keenest C Scows go out ...
..
... and get some practice.
..
We were hoping the winds would be as good the next day for the first of eight scheduled races.
..
The flag was still at half mast to honour the fallen Shuttle astronauts.
..
The C Scow Midwinters winners, Andy Burdick and Charlie Harrison, looked formidable already.
..l
Boat speed testing on a lovely afternoon. Here we all were, frittering away our time,
when we could have been at home, improving our essential winter driving skills!

..
But we all made ...
..
... the best of it.
..
Time for one more picture and then we had to drag Dotty and Mike off to dinner ...
..
... at Dead River Vic's. Not only were the food and service great, but the waiter took a picture of the Wayfarer table.
