Sunday 9 February 2003: rained out, awards
..
0800 Sunday morning and the rain starts to fall. Uncle Al stands under the awning of the "smoking lounge". SHADES is ready for the day's racing (centre), largely because Uncle Al no longer has a car with which to launch and thought he'd better beg a "lift" before the launch ramps got too crowded.
..
Already there is a lovely offshore breeze blowing but the rain is falling harder all the time.
..
Hank Van Twyver gets ...
..
... his choice seat in the tent early. Wise man!
..
The club "rabbit", Gale Shoemaker
..
By shortly after 10 a.m., the RC wisely decide to cancel the day's racing due to the ever increasing rain and cold weather.
Nick Seraphinoff (yellow hood) and Frank Goulay (red cap) look a bit damp after the short trip from their cars to the tent.

..
The committee decided to proceed with the awards right away and let people get an early start for home. Wayfarer overall winner, Uncle Al clutches his plate after thanking the Lake Eustis Sailing Club and their many volunteers for an outstanding regatta. Not in the photo but deserving at least 50% of the credit was Al's superb crew and travelling companion, Marc Bennett.
..
Tied on points for first place in the non-spinnaker division but losing on the tie-breaker, was Butch Minson
who sailed just a super series! In the foreground, we have Butch's sister, Ellen, recording the moment as well.

..
The non-spinnaker division winner was Gale Shoemaker (with crew, Don Poosch)
who has just accepted his award from LESC Commodore, Marty Zonnenberg (left).

..
And Hans Gottschling, our supreme maker of Wayfarer covers, who had intended to come and sail but in the end could not find a travelling companion and decided single-handing Toronto to Eustis and back would be just too much, sent down four of his coveted Wayfarer bags. The first was to go to Dotty Murto who did so much to make this event a beautiful reality for all of us sailors. The other three were to be awarded at Uncle Al's discretion. From left to right, they went to:
  • Ted Benedict who turned out to be the proverbial somebody in the saying "Somebody has to come last" and who was an excellent sport about it as well!
  • Ellen Hill who showed the true Wayfarer spirit as she was twice faced with no crew situations but went out and found replacements - and when that didn't work, sailed single-handed. Well sailed, Ellen!
  • Michele Parish and her husband, Richard Johnson, who - since their first Midwinters appearance in 2001 have worked very hard at not only improving their racing skills but also at building the Wayfarer presence at their Catawba YC in Charlotte, North Carolina. Our future rests in hands such as these, and I'm pleased that they are such enthusiastic and capable hands! Note that Michele snagged the yellow bag to match Free Range Chickin
And so, the awards came to an end, with all the Wayfarers already planning to be here next year and try out the new LESC clubhouse and its facilities. See you there!!

This was not one of those days where the moment the racing was cancelled, the sun burst through and the rain stopped. No indeed, when we got back to our billet, Mike introduced us to Lake Murto (above) but warned us not to talk about it since he didn't want the landlord upping his rent to "lakefront property" rates.
