Friday 7 February 2003: race 1
..
Well into the final minute of the C Scow countdown to race #1. Note the nice gust...
..
... which has favoured the RC Boat end dramatically.
..
Hah!!!! Nick and Frank have made it on time for Race #1 - with a good five minutes to spare!!
..
At the gun! From our position here, we thought for sure that there would be a General Recall,
but only 1 or 2 sacrificial lambs got the axe and the 5-minute countdown to our first start was underway.

..
Still lots of time for Nick and Frank (864) to get used to each other in their first-ever sail together. The ultimate C Scow winner,
Andy Burdick in V45 is just keeping his clear air after a nice, safe start - despite LD 100 having been over early (OCS).

..
V45 looks to be in very nice shape as the boat to windward goes back to re-start while LF1 (single-handed??) is
hanging on nicely, also. If LF-27 (far right) was over early, he's in bad shape since the Around-the-ends Rule was in effect!

..
Frank and Nick even had enough time before our start ...
..
... to come over and say "hello".
..
"Look, ma, no hands!" Nick gets a reading of the time left from Marc. At this point, it was time to put the camera away and contemplate the start strategy. Al and Marc decided to hang around the windward third of the line to see how things shaped up. most of the sailors were far from being in mid-season form. They drifted away from the very favoured RC Boat end and left a nice spot for Al who started in great shape once he had convinced Mike Murto not to "barge". Near the windward mark, it appeared that the boats who had gone left would do well, with Gale Shoemaker and Don Poosch coming in on port in the lead. As I recall however, a late shift gave the lead back to Al who subsequently pulled away from the spinnaker-less Gale. After a less than spectacular first beat, Nick was able to unleash Wayfarer Man and his spinnaker. They had just moved into second when they paid the price for refusing to read the SI's. They sailed through the forbidden Start-Finish zone and then had to go back around when a kind-hearted competitor informed them of their faux pas!
..
After the second beat? While a leery Scow keeps well away, Gale heads for ...
..
... the offset mark where he will start his second run. The red mark on the right was the Scows' windward mark,
and everyone had to keep a good lookout as the Scows were running but the W's reaching across here!
..
Uncle Al captures Marc's winning form in pixels, happily noting that batch of Scows will be around the leeward and
long gone by the time SHADES gets there! Note the higher than usual spi pole attachment point on the mast.

..
Al still hasn't made up his mind which side of the Start/Finish line he'd like to go to.
..
With a Scow straggler there to make life interesting, Gale Shoemaker starts the final run in 2nd place, just ahead of Hubert and Phyllis Dauch (black hull) and Hank Van Twyver. Nick has recovered into 5th place and is about to round onto the run ahead of the first of the single-handers, Butch Minson.
..
Meanwhile, Al gets the opportunity to further annoy his crew by snapping a shot of our hard-working RC.
..
And up ahead, it's an exciting contest for the Scows, a batch of whom will round very close together.
..
And it becomes an ever tighter fight ...
..
... over second place in W's. Hard to figure what those Scows were doing there??? If behind, they were very far behind!
