Friday 7 February 2003: races 1 - 2
..
This was a nearly perfect race for Marc and Al who won fairly handily. The fight over second place was much closer as Gale Shoemaker (93)
hung on to edge out Hubert Dauch (far right with Phyllis hiking), while Nick Seraphinoff (864, middle) would come on to grab 4th place.

..
Hubert and Phyllis looking very pleased with their fine 3rd as they cross the line.
..
Nick and Frank roll across the line in 4th place with those lovely Mike Mac sails.
..
The first of the single-handers, Hank Van Twyver ...
..
... looks good as he works his way up the final beat ...
..
... towards a 5th-place finish.
..
Butch Minson crossed in 6th. If Butch had a crew here, he would no doubt have that crew sheet the jib in a bit more. This is a fine illustration of how easily the top of the jib leech moves a long way. Sheeting in another inch would likely bring that upper leech in to where the whole sail, up and down, presents a nice even, effective angle of attack to the wind. Sheeted out maybe an inch too far, the upper leech has fallen way off, a fact reflected by the relative angles of the upper and lower inside ticklers.
..
Following Butch across the line were Geoff Edwards (9483) and Pat Reardon in 7th.
Ellen Hill sailing US3951 with Charlie Williams...

..
... very close behind in 8th.

In an all-North Carolina battle, Richard Johnson and Michele (note the fine hiking form!!) ...
..
... edged out Catawba YC clubmate, Jim Higgins with Wayne Ingersoll (10302) for 9th place.
..
The increasing winds did not leave much of Mike Murto's rudder in the water as he cruised to 11th ahead of Jim McIntyre.
..
And in 13th place, trying to get the most from his Hans Fogh cruising jib (note the red label)...
..
... was Ted Benedict.
..
Race 2: Taking advantage of the fine, strengthening breeze, the RC wasted little time in starting the second race. This time, we positioned our hove-to SHADES just to windward of the start line between the two boats with red flags and off to the right. The above picture was taken just a few seconds before the C Scow start.
..
A pretty good looking start but they were all about two seconds early.
..
The safety boat (far right) announces the General Recall to any who may have missed the two sounds and/or the flag.
..
While the Scows return to the line, Nick and Frank continue to tweak W864 Allies.
..
Hard to tell if Nick is satisfied with what he sees. Frank does his pre-race meditation?
..
"We'll get you this time!!"
