Ontarios Race 5 photos by Stuart Pursey |
The RC informs a
surprised team de Boer ... ... |
... and Marc
Bennett aboard SHADES that,
yes, there will be a 5th Saturday race, what with the winds being so
ideal. Uncle Al and Marc are sailing on the assumption that they won
race 2 (not wanting the ask the RC about their possible OCS and thus
give them ideas!), but even so, their assumed 3-1-3-2 record does not
compare well with Peter's (assumed) 1-3-1-1. They have to sail to beat
Peter in this race or kiss all hopes of defending their Ontario title
good-bye.

At this point, judging
by Bill Fyfe's (937) angle to the line on port, the pin end appears to
be favoured. ... |
But then ... ... |
... the wind swings
back as they start nears, and ... ... |
... Al decides to
start near the boat end. Or will he? ... |
Once more, the wind
backs and ... ... |
... now, Peter looks
great coming in on port at the pin end. Bill (937) and Mark (7673) are
also well positioned, but ... ... |
... Al (3854) decides
to hang back so that he won't start right in Bill's and Mark's
backwind. Above, Peter is ... ... |
... tacking off Bill's (937) bow, hoping ... ... |
... that he will lay
the mark. The line seems to have ended up fairly square to the wind, as
... ... |
... the race gets
underway. Not the greatest start for Uncle Al (3854) but Peter (4th
from right at the far end) ... ... |
... has gotten
"buried" by Bill (3rd from right) and will end up having to
tack and ... ... |
... go behind much of
the fleet. Now that Roger (7700) has tacked away, Al (behind Roger's main) will soon follow suit and go after ... ... |
... Peter and Alex. ... |

to give the 90-year-old George Blanchard a little break. |
Bill Fyfe and Brian
Egan parlayed their fine start into an early lead and were never
threatened again as they won their second race of the day. Al and Marc
managed a 2nd while mostly concentrating on not letting Peter and Alex
beat them again. Andrew Gumley and Mike Frame scored a 3rd (their best
result of the series) ahead of Mark Taylor, while Peter Rahn finally
got a "drop race", placing 5th. |
