Ontarios Race 7, part 2 photos by Lois Frankel |
Just before the gun:
Bill Fyfe tacks into the hole Al (l) had worked hard to
create between himself and Mark. ... |
As Marc counts down
the last five seconds, Al checks his position on the line. ... |
Roger has a nice spot.
Al (3854) finally gets the sails in, but it's too late: Bill (937) is
already moving and ... ... |
... will bury Al in
backwind and then others will come along to complete Al's interment!
Note the fine start in the making for Brian
Mills and Ryan Leighton (4675) who are coming through to leeward of
Roger at speed, and ... ... |
... cruise on through
at the gun to ... ... |
... take the early
lead. Both Bill (937) and Mark (7673) look to have fine starts at the
slightly favoured pin end, while series leaders, Peter (286) and Al
(3854) have their work cut out for them! ... |
Here's what we looked
like from ... ... |
... to leeward of the
line. ... |
Mike Codd's start at
the unfavoured boat end at least gives him the option of tacking away
to clear his air. Meanwhile, the three early leaders won't thank Robin
Allardyce (r) for this rather unorthodox approach to starting. ... |
A nice, crisp tack has
allowed Dave and Charles Hansman to get into clear air underneath RED
TOP. ... |
As Peter (286) romps
off into clear air on port, Al (3854) and Andrew (4610) have also
tacked - only to discover that others have had the same idea and are
now sitting on their wind. To complete the frustration, Robin (6071)
still trying to get back to the line to start, is now sailing straight
at them. A few unkind words may have been directed his way??? ... |
An embarrassingly poor
start for Doug (l) who doesn't even have Robin's (6071) excuse
of having gotten too far from the start area to make it back in time!
Now that the leaders have sailed away, (r to l) Roger, John,
Andrew and Al have ... ... |
... lots of wind to play with - perhaps more than the
leaders who are still heading left into the middle of the river. ... |
Fine form for Roger
who is going up the middle. ... |
Finally - the RC can
relax for a bit. ... |
Alan (r)
checks what's astern while Andrew (l) is about to ... ... |
... tack to escape
John's (7351) wind shadow, a fact which ... ... |
... will help Doug (1366). ... |
Robin and his mystery
crew sail past on port while new crew, Teri, slowly gets the 4610 jib
in. ... |
Sailing towards
downtown Ottawa on port tack: (l to r) Mike, Alan and Dave ... |
(l to r) Doug
in Roger's dirt, and Robin ... |
Robin tacks ... ... |
... away as (l to
r) Roger, Doug and Mike continue towards the starboard layline. ... |
Roger tacks for the
mark. ... |
Al did surprisingly
well playing the shifts up the shore side, rounding with Roger (7700)
in second place behind Bill Fyfe (l). Peter (r) is lying 5th, so Al's title hopes remain alive. ... |
It's a close
battle once again. ... |
Attacking from leeward
as usual, Al (red spi) starts to make his move. ... |
Andrew Gumley (l)
also does well by ... ... |
... attacking from below. ... |
Brian Mills clings to
his lead over John de Boer. ... |
the top three: (l
to r) Al, Bill and Roger ... |
a wider angle ... |
Robin Allardyce hangs
in there despite ... ... |
... lack of spinnaker. ... |
(l to r) Alan, Brian, Doug ... |
Al (3854) has waited
for Bill to gybe first and has enough nerve to wait a bit ... ... |
... longer as Marc
douses the chute before he ... ... |
... gybes, trusting
that he'll be able to reach across Bill's bow before the latter ... ... |
... can get there to
claim the room he may be entitled to. Mark (blue & white spi) is
coming up fast. |
