the
2005 Wayfarer Ontarios Sunday morning: Race 6 - 1 photos by Val Gont, Nancy Webster Cole, Uncle Al |
A 40° back during the
final minute of the countdown has left us able to virtually lay the
windward mark on port, and above, the fleet scrambles to accommodate
the new reality. ... |
Textbook light air form for
Frank and Mike - of course if Mike were less substantial, he could sit
on the floorboard and avoid blocking the slot. ... |
Sue and Stephan look great
as well. ... |
As do Dwight and George. ... |
You can practically hear
the water gurgling as Dave and Carol have Banshee chugging
along to perfection in a ... ... |
... streak of hot air from
the direction of the Parliament Buildings. Sue and Stephan have taken
their short starboard hitch to reach the windward mark. ... |
Jason and Lori have Green
Side Up in fine trim. ... |
Sunday crew, Carolyn
Jordon, waves to the camera as Alan Asselstine has Majam moving
right along - reef points and all!! ... |
Paul and Marilyn try to
recover after a late start. This photo illustrates a main that is too
tight along its luff: note the crease along the mast that these light
airs will have trouble ironing out!! ... |
Now that the fleet is off
up the first beat, Janet and Mike can take a moment to relax aboard the
RC boat. ... |
What was to be a run on our
windward-leeward course, has become a ... ... |
... close spinnaker reach. ... |
After getting off the
line
on port early along with Frank and Mike (r), Al and Marc
rounded the windward mark in the lead and now have pulled out all the
stops in trying to extend that lead by taking the jib down to avoid
disturbing the fragile wind flow over their beloved Mike McNamara
spinnaker that has become a bit threadbare in its 14th season of
service but is still a lovely workhorse, especially in these
light airs.
... |
Fine spinnaker form also
for Frank and Mike with their ... ... |
... new Mike McNamara-cut
sails by Quantum. ... |
Series leader, Doug
Netherton (r), uses a North spinnaker borrowed from Al to good
effect in his battle to stay ahead of Dave Hansman and ... ... |
... Fred Black (7379). ... |
The wind remains pretty
patchy and keeping those spinnakers flying is ... ... |
... a challenge for the
best of crews!! ... |
Frank and Mike nurse KGB
through a soft spot near the RC boat. ... |
Doug and
Françoise keep Toodle-oo moving nicely, also. This photo
illustrates very well why one should go up in the lulls but down with
the puffs: By luffing up a bit here, Doug will cross the streak of
lighter air more quickly (shorter distance to the stronger breeze plus
better apparent wind!!). Once in the stronger breeze, he can bear away.
Ideally, this picture should show the better wind as a streak as well -
which it very often is! - so that bearing away keeps you in the better
wind longer.
