Sunday morning: Race 6 - 2 photos by Val Gont, Nancy Webster Cole, Uncle Al |
Fred and David sail into
the wind streak, but notice that flat water does not always mean ... ... |
... no wind - as Dwight
shows
above. ... |
With a convincing win
over
Frank (l), Marc and Al move into a second-place series tie with
Frank and Mike, just one point behind Doug and Françoise with
one race to go. One problem with a windward-leeward course and a
spread-out fleet is that the RC cannot change the course such that this
shift has made the race into a virtual "parade" - great if you have the
lead but frustrating for all the others!!!
... |
Frank (red hull) did not
get the same streak as Uncle Al and will have to tack to reach the
finish. ... |
It'll be a solid second for
Frank ahead of Doug. Note Mike staying out of the slot between main and
jib here! ... |
While the rich get richer,
the middle boats end up in a series of dead spots near the leeward mark. ... |
Jason and Lori try to coax
W3140 those last few yards to the mark. ... |
Aylmer Island, once a lunch
stop in our Cruise Race, makes a pleasant back-drop as the three boats
fighting over 3rd begin their "beat" to the finish. (l to r)
Doug, Fred, Dwight ... |
In the end, Doug and
Françoise pulled away. ... |
Alan and ... ... |
... Carolyn cruise towards
the leeward mark. ... |
Quick! Who has right of way
here between Dwight (l) and Sue (7928)??? ... |
Indeed! It is Sue who is on
starboard tack while Dwight is on port. Of course, even while
manoeuvering to douse the spinnaker, Sue must take care not to alter
course in any way that will not leave Dwight room to keep clear (rule 16). ... |
Alan and Carolyn enjoy a
fine day on Lac Deschênes. Majam is well balanced with no
sign of the rudder turbulence that would indicate weather helm. ... |
Toodle-oo nears the
line while ... ... |
... David Black (2nd
from left) and Dwight (2nd from right) will take their
4th-place battle right to the wire. ... |
Almost done, Doug and
Françoise ... ... |
... cross the line in 3rd in this race and hold onto their series lead - albeit
by one precarious point!! ... |
Perhaps helped by being in
better wind, David Black (l) pinches out from below ... ... |
... Dwight (4606) to move
into 4th while Dave Hansman (282) sits 6th. ... |
About 50
metres from the finish, Dwight (4606) reviews his options - none of
them terribly appealing. Dwight can keep following David and hope that Rusty
Scuppers capsizes in a wayward gust since that's the only way he'll
pass David in the short distance remaining. Or Dwight can tack into
clearer air but what appears to be a dead spot. A million-to-one shot
but Dwight really has no choice but to ...
