On
a
day like this, you want to get anything out of the
back hatch that you may/want or need and then ensure
that the cover is perfectly fastened down. In a
blow, the only safe way to get access to the back
tank once you're underway, is to heave to with the
board full up or to completely rag the sails and let
the boat come to a full stop sideways to the wind
with the board completely raised in the R&R
position.

Looks like
Dennis Figley has put some shock cord across his back
hatch cover just to be extra safe. A fine idea. ... |
Another small
rain squall comes in across the Adirondacks - not the
kind of day to tempt the fair weather or inexperienced
sailor. ... |
No whitecaps in
the relatively protected bay but note the effect of
the stiff breeze on the pennants and the bulrushes.
The latter turn out to be a perfect docking facility
as they instantly dissipate any wave action and permit
side-by-side "docking" better than any man-made dock. ... |
Cruise leader,
Dick Harrington, heads for Blue Mist (foreground)
complete with waterproof camera and waterproof chart
"case". We're still looking forward to those pictures,
Dick! I've left 5 MB of room for them here!! ... |
Kevin Pegler
and Uncle Al (behind the camera) prepare to set out in
the good wood ship Wildwood while the Tasar awaits the arrival of Tony and Mary. ... |
A whole new
definition of "snug harbour" ... |
Button Bay
Campground as seen from the water. ... |
Lisa, David and
young Crystal Nelson (r) prepare to get
underway as do Andre and Monique Girard (well reefed
in the middle). ... |
The tough part
in these shallow waters will sailing upwind with very
little board plus a partially raised rudder. Not an
easy task! ... |
Once well out
into deeper waters, we hove to in Wildwood
and were able to relax and get some nice shots. ... |
Dennis and Judy
Figley with Ron Baker very slowly ... ... |
... claw their
way out into deeper water. ... |
Aboard the
Tasar, Tony and Mary have an even more delicate task
since they really, really don't want to run aground
with their dagger board. ... |
Aha! Deeper
water at last and Mary can begin to lower the board
some more. ... |
Mission
accomplished! Next stop: the bar in the marina in
Westport!! ... |
A fine-looking
but ... ... |
... somewhat
tippy machine!! ... |
The skies
continue to look threatening as the last of our fleet
leaves "harbour": (l to r) Tom and Dave
Graefe, André and Monique Girard, Dick and Margie
Harrington (who are hanging back to help anyone who
may need it). ... |
The Nelsons
(10246) head out, followed by the Graefes (green hull)
and the Girards (3098). ... |
André and
Monique have Mag reefed down and ready
to roll as Wildwood and the camera drift
around the point. ... |
Tom Erickson
and Jake Maarse (?) have teamed up ... ... |
... for today
... ... |
... and are
going very nicely with a single reef in the main. |
