2003 North American Wayfarer Rally

After the previous night's rains, we awoke to brilliant sunshine. But there were ominous signs of more "unsettled" weather on the horizon above the Adirondacks ...
...

... as some of us headed into Vergennes for breakfast.
..

A 9:30 Skippers' Meeting saw Dick outline a proposed sail SW to a lighthouse on the NY side and then a run diagonally back across the lake to a bay north of Button Bay where we could stop for a (BYO) lunch and explore the Lake Champlain Maritime Museum. As Dick spoke, the wind began to pick up quite a bit and visions of reefing stirred in our heads. Well, not all of our heads: in Frank's case, for instance, it was visions of wild, exciting spinnaker planes likely followed almost immediately by an invigorating swim in the waters of Lake Champlain!

Today's meeting has some new faces and no need of protection from the rain. (l to r)  Al Baker, Jake Maarse, Kevin and Stephanie Pegler, Theo Van Geest, Daniel Snipes, Bill Harkins, Mary Abel, Tony Krauss.
..

(l to r)  Rachel and Kit Wallace, Judy and Dennis Figley, Roxanne Royce and Al Baker.
..

On the right, we have Ron and Lori Baker, who ended up having so much trouble getting off our shallow beach that they packed up and went home. Ron was eager to do some sailing on his own after Friday with the Figleys but it was a very tough day for a beginning sailor to try to make it off that beach. We hope this hasn't put you off sailing and Wayfarers altogether, Ron and Lori, and that you will come back and sail with us. Next time, we'll make sure that an experienced sailor goes out with you if conditions warrant. I myself will be happy to sail with you. I'm pretty good at sitting quietly, taking pictures and drinking my beer unless my advice is actually required.
On the left, Frank Goulay a.k.a. Wayfarer Man with visions of spinnakers dancing in his head and a beer steady in his hand.

(l to r)  Tom Graefe, Patsy Poulin, Rachel and Kit Wallace look on as Dick double-checks the suggested itinerary du jour.
..

Dick has his audience spellbound: (l to r)   Patsy, Rachel, Kit, Judy and Dennis Figley, Roxanne Royce and André Girard ...
..

... Andr again, Kevin and Stephanie Pegler, Theo Van Geest, Daniel Snipes, Drew and Shirley Pegler.
..

Our sailors pause and ponder at the water's edge ...
..

... as the southerly winds continue to pick up.
..

But the day is sunny and warm ...
..

... so off we go!
..

You need a Wayfarer with a hatch on the bow deck to be able to strike this pose correctly.
..

Dick makes a gallant effort here - but falls well short!!
..

Theo Van Geest ferries the cover of Jake Maarse's Alsmeer  safely to shore.
...

And the wind continues to pick up.
...

A fine-looking day!
