Race 2 pics
(mostly) by Jenna Goldt

Race 2 brought us similar winds and course, starting with a beat into the mouth of Wye Creek, whence a series of ...

... the fleet.

Al rounds with a narrow lead over Dwight. Never mind defending his wind against Dwight. All Marc and Al want to do here is get out from under the cliff where the risk of ...
...

... getting no wind at all is high. Here Jens (7663) limps around ahead of Al Nichols (7380).
...

Jens, too, tries to get away from the shore while the getting is (fairly) good!
...

Al holds the boom out so that he can heel the boat slightly to windward to help the spinnaker fill (and to reduce wetted surface).
...

Dwight and Pat continue to ghost along in 2nd place.
...

Excellent light-air upwind form for Alastair and David as they begin beat #2.
...

I think it was right about here that Al (3854) ghosted past an obstruction in the form of a guy fishing from an inner tube. He yelled at me as I luffed up and passed him with a good six inches to spare on the side away from his fishing rod. "We're racing for our National Championship here, " I soothingly explained. "Fuck off!" he shot back with his rapier-like wit.
...

More shifts off the west shore have left Al Nichols (7380) and Daryl Van Kampen (667) nearly becalmed, while raising Jeff Eames' (7220) and Len Macdougall's (6732) hopes that they will pass to leeward.
...

Oops! Looks like Jeff (7220) should have gone down with the puff like Len (6732) is doing.
...

Mike Codd rounds just ahead of first-race winner, Jens Biskaborn.
...

Jens (7663) just escapes an impending mark mess, as do Bob Kennedy and Peter Galsworthy (3571) who have made big gains by staying away from the west shore.
...

Lots of fun here! Taking advantage of the mess are ...
...

... Fred Black and Michael Kachkovsky (7379) who will move up a few spots.
...

Bob (3571), Len (6732) and Fred (7379) start beat #2 to the finish with a nice puff.
...

To windward of Bob (3571), Jens appears to have inexplicably run out of wind!!
...

Looks like Jeff (7220) is the only one choosing to sail straight at the finish line here. Of course, by doing the "right" thing, he may end up sailing out of the nice breeze blessing Bob (3571).
...

Jeff (l) and Al Nichols dare to go where I have never found anything but trouble - the east shore south of #2. (Indeed, they finished last and 2nd-last.)
...

Nearing the finish: (l to r) Jens, Mike and Bob. Off Mike's bow, we can see Uncle Al relaxing after scoring his first win of the series.
...

Brad Biskaborn and ...
...

... Aaron Goldt, our High-Performance Mark-set Team.
...

Al Nichols gets a nice breeze but it's ...
...

... too little, too late!
...

Rick Goldt directs the mark-laying for race 3 as daughter, Jenna, beautifies the barge.
