Race 5 pics
by Rick Goldt

The lovely Lake Huron-donated lake breeze continued, and so the RC gave us a 5th race while the going was good.
23 June 2020: Ever fast on the uptake, Uncle Al notices - only 14 years later - something amiss with the flags.
...

Just after a nice, clean start, it looks like Fred Black (2nd from left) is rescuing a man overboard? A lot of the boats again held starboard off the line, hoping for a starboard knock and the concomitant ...

... port tack lift.

After a while, it became a question of how close to the windward shore one was willing to risk going in search of the big port lift.
...

Moving well up the second beat, Alastair and David sail into ...
...

... a lift that puts them within striking position of Mike Codd to leeward and ahead.
...

Fear of hitting dead spots should be dancing in Mike's and Alastair's heads right about now.
Mike (l) seems to be sailing into a knock, and if Alastair gets the same wind ...
...

... Mike should be able to tack and cross Alastair any time now. Holding on any longer is begging to have the return oscillation pin Mike onto starboard at the mercy of Alastair. Cross 'em while you can, says Stuart Walker!
...

John (7351) and Bob Kennedy get a nice lift in the middle of the lake.
...

Mike (2nd from right) has tacked, as has Alastair (r). The latter should probably tack again,
since he could then sail into the wind patch that is giving Mike such a nice lift!
...

No screw-ups for Uncle Al (l) in this one as he and Marc are rolling to a runaway win while (l to r) Mike, John and Jens are in a close fight over second place.   click here for full-size pic; then click Back button to return to this page
...

The fight for fifth is very close, too.
...

Coming up the final beat of the day, Marc and Al (l) are doing a text book job of defending their lead: They held port around the mark until second-place Mike was about half-way to the mark, at which point they tacked such that (above) they are more or less positioned directly between Mike and the finish line (where these photos are being taken).
...

With this much lead, Al can easily afford to delay or speed up his tacks in order to ...
...

... pick better shifts or gusts in which to tack.
...

I like the way John and Dolores (l) are "attacking" Jens and Sharon from leeward and ahead here as second best option to being windward and ahead if you can get it! Of course, on Fanshawe and other small lakes, nothing is very certain, but assuming you are both sailing the lifted tack, the next shift - the percentages say - should be a knock that will benefit the boat to leeward and ahead. I know! I know! There are half a dozen scenarios in which John could lose here, but on average, John's approach will bring better results. In this instance, John edged Jens for 3rd place.
...

Mike Codd and Kirk Iredale are about to grab a fine 2nd ahead of John (2nd from left).
