Fanshawe Yacht Club * June 24-25, 2006 Race 3 & 4 pics by Rick Goldt |
For
Race 3,
right after lunch, the wind veered into the SE, so we
started under the
Race Hut cliff where spectators could have some
entertainment with
their beers. click here

But,
alas,
SE is another hated wind direction at Fanshawe, leading
as it does, to
beats to a windward mark (far right) that ... ... |
... is
often
becalmed by the near-by cliffs. Here we can see Al and
Marc (5th
from left) deciding to take a chance on going ... ... |
... left into Wye Creek in hopes that they
will keep the
wind and not get hammered by too many starboard boats as
they (Marc and
Al) come in along the port lay line. click here

Al (l)
did indeed get lucky, and rounded just ahead of Bob
Kennedy, John de
Boer and Mike Codd. The mess at the mark, meanwhile,
shows graphically,
why we hate having to beat around the windward mark
placed in this
position! click here for full-size pic; then click Back button to return to this page ... |
Shortly after
race 3,
the winds died entirely, but the wily veteran, Rick
Goldt, kept us out
there, pointing out that we might well get the lake
breeze off Lake
Huron which should reach us by between 3 and 4
o'clock. We thought,
looking at the glassy lake, Rick was being overly
optimistic, but sure
enough, Rick's breeze came through in fine style -
just about at 4 p.m.
Above, we are on our way in Race 4. Well, most of us,
are off. Michael
Kachkovsky (7379) is doing a "720" after his port-tack
start resulted
in a smash-up with Uncle Al who ...

shape, either. click here for full-size pic; then click Back button to return to this page ... |

The
race
remains beautifully close as the leaders near the
leeward mark. ... |
A narrow lead at
the
leeward mark can turn into a big advantage: Here,
Dwight Aplevich (l)
gets to the hold the well favoured port tack, while
John (2nd from
left) is stuck in dirty air, and Jens (r)
as well as Al (3rd
from left) have been forced to tack to clear
their air.
... |
Dwight
(l)
continues to lead the parade as port tack remains very
attractively
lifted. |
