Race 6 pics
by Rick Goldt and Uncle Al

Sunday morning brought light SE winds, and a humane Rick Goldt started us just north of the swimming beach where we could have a beat to mark B off the Race Hut rather than to a windward mark close to the windward cliffs past Wye Creek. The fight for the Canadian title had effectively been reduced to a duel between Al (2-1-1-1) and Dwight (4-2-2-1). Today was Marc's turn to helm aboard SHADES, and we managed to arrive about 30 seconds late for the first race du jour.

Timely arrivals - about 2/3 of the fleet - jockey for position during the countdown.

Today, Leo Van Kampen, is sailing with his wife, Joanne, instead of their son, Daryl.
...

I believe this may have been the start - with Jens (7663) in great shape.
...

John and Dolores (l) have moved well and hold a comfortable lead over Mike Codd and Jens Biskaborn as the fleet reaches along the east shore towards the gybe mark. Marc and Al (r) lie 7th but have sailed low and further away from the dangerous windward shore - note apparent mast height - in hopes of passing a boat or two, not to mention getting inside at the gybe mark.

John and Dolores move delicately as they round the gybe, leading but in a soft spot. It is no doubt cheering them to note that Jens and Mike will be too busy fighting each other to be able to concentrate fully on catching the leaders!
...

Indeed, Marc came up at the last minute while the windward boats hit a lull and each other, and has moved into 4th while the rest of the fleet, similarly becalmed sits at the mark. While Mike and Jens fight it out for 2nd, John and Dolores roll on towards a race 6 win.    click here for full-size pic; then click Back button to return to this page

Starting beat #2, John and Dolores (r) have a big lead, but are playing with fire here. No matter how nice the wind may look out in the middle, John and Dolores should be putting some of their big lead onto each tack (i.e. stay between their nearest pursuers and the next mark). Even if this means tacking off a lift or giving up on expected better winds - it's what Stuart Walker means when he advises: "Spend your lead!" Here, John should tack immediately!  click here for full-size pic; then click Back button to return to this page

"Yah!" I used to hear my Junior Sailors argue, "But look at the great winds I got by going out here!!" "Yes, but it's a risk that you didn't need to take." Here, John could have defended against a huge starboard lift by putting half or even only a third of his big lead to windward of Mike and Jens, then tacked again, and still reached this great wind well before the other two. "Don't be greedy!" Stuart Walker wisely says.
...

Mike and Kirk have tacked into the big port tack lift that Jens has yet to reach.
...

Marc and Al were so far back that they sailed into the port lift almost immediately after rounding. This was not what they wanted, what with the three leaders all being off to the left and getting the inside on this lift. Still, it's a nice breeze!
...

Quite the nice breeze coming in off Jens and Sharon's bow as they pass the RC boat on their way up the second beat.
...

Lured by the possibility of better breeze, many boats went almost at right angles to the rhumb line to get here - usually a low percentage move!
...

Scott and Paul Town (9239) were with us on the Sunday but did arrive even later than Marc and Al.
...

As Al Nichols (l) still dawdles up the 2nd beat (he must have started really late!), John de Boer continues his horizon job as he and Dolores near the gybe mark for the second time. Marc (3rd from right) is again taking the low road away from the shore and will move into ...
...

... 2nd place. John and Dolores, meanwhile, have just rounded onto the final short beat to their first-place finish.

Bob and Peter relax after race 6 as do ...

The happy winners, John and Dolores de Boer, look ...
