the 2004 Midwinters
Friday: race 2, part 1
photos by Kim Bergevin and Ellen Hill

While the wind was whistling through the trees as we prepared to head out for race #2 after lunch, the reality out on the lake was not bad at all. Only a few overpowering gusts from time to time. Above, Jim McIntyre (helm) has teamed up with Ted Benedict, and the two are having a nice, leisurely run out to the race area.  Not nearly as relaxing as Jimmy sail back to shore in this pic from 2003 though:

...

Nick Seraphinoff and Joe Blackmore have decided to roll out the big artillery by switching to their Mike McNamara sails
for the afternoon. Here they are tuning up by going upwind before race 2 which went off just after 1300 hrs.
...

Likewise, a little tuning for Geoff and Pat.
...

Joe De Brincat and his crew, Peter Every, have replaced their torn jib and have everything in textbook form for race 2.
...

The gusts are still coming through from time to time.
...

A lovely afternoon as the RC gets set to send us off to the second race..
...
About two seconds to the start "gun".
...
The gun goes and they're off! It's a line that is nicely square to the wind.
...

A bit of a starboard tack lift finds Uncle Al (3854) well positioned to take advantage.
Now the trick will be to go for speed, which ...
...

... he does.
...

Nick (864) is in danger of being squeezed out. If he goes up, down or slow, he will get bad air ...
...

from Al, Hubert (just visible to leeward and ahead of Nick) or both,
as has happened to Joe De Brincat (1115) who has wisely tacked to clear his air.
...

Joe and Peter looking pretty good although the main is probably more twisted off than desirable for peak pointing.
...

The rest, meanwhile, continue on along the shores of downtown Eustis. Geoff Edwards (9483) looks like he hopes to tack but has Hank (1395) blocking him. This would be a good time for Geoff to pinch a lot and make Hank feel the need to tack.
...

No sooner said than done. But now Geoff is slightly lifted and he decides to hold starboard tack for a bit longer. Nick (864) has tacked and Al (3854) is tempted to tack and cover his closest pursuer but chooses to hold his lift instead. On the final leg, Al would likely cover in this situation.
...

Going right has not paid for Joe here. If this puff holds, Joe will need to supplement his hiking power with some vang in order to flatten the main and make W1115 easier to keep flat. Right now, Joe's main looks picturesque but is far too twisted for optimal windward work.
...

Uncle Al (3854) now wishes he had tacked with Nick (864) who
has come back to starboard tack and has gotten a nice inside lift.
...

Michele checks out the lay line as a puff heels the Chick'n.
...

Nick and Joe looking good as they wrestle with a gust. If that white water off the transom is caused by an angled rudder, Nick should let Allies luff up a bit while easing a bit of main. If the gust look like it will last a minute or more, it'll be worth cranking on even more vang.
...

Coming in from the left corner on the port layline we have Geoff (9483), Hubert (3636) and Joe (1115). The latter is in bad shape since he is getting dirty air from the other two but has nowhere to usefully go since he's on the layline already.
