the 2004 Midwinters
Friday: race 3, part 2 and post-race
photos by Kim Bergevin and Uncle Al

A relaxing two-sail run for Geoff and Pat.
...

Richard and Michele have the Chick'n beautifully balanced after a gybe towards the left end of the gate.
Sheeting the jib in to leeward before doing the pole will make it easier for the helm to keep the spinnaker flying.
...

A close fight at the gate: Hubert and Frank (3636) get around just ahead of Geoff and Pat (9483) while Richard and Michele are stuck on the outside. Here Geoff is entitled to just enough room to comfortably clear both Hubert and the mark since Richard (10139) is leeward and thus has right of way.
...

All three boats doing it right: Hubert (3636) luffs up to make sure Geoff (9483) can't get his nose in to windward and thus prevent Hubert from tacking; Geoff sails low and fast in hopes of breaking through to leeward; Richard (10139) has gone far enough outside to arrive clear astern of Geoff and is now in a good spot to be able to tack away ...
...

... which Richard (r) does. Hubert (3636) has gotten underway again smartly after his quick luff at the mark and foiled Geoff's attempt to break through to leeward. This is not a good place for Geoff (9483) to let Jansubar heel and luff up since it only gets him deeper into Hubert's wind shadow. He should either ease sail and power off more to leeward or make a quick tack to clear his air.
...

Both Marc (3854) and Nick (864) in good form as they lead the way up the second beat.
Marc has a loose cover on Nick, i.e. going the same way but not sitting on Nick's wind.

Under the watchful eye of Skipper Marc, Uncle Al checks to make sure his spinnaker stuff is hoist ready as ...
...

... SHADES does the brief jog to the offset mark being pointed out by Al.
...

Jim McIntyre (r) tacks to port near the windward mark but will have to watch for the starboard Richard Johnson (10139) who is otherwise engaged while setting the spinnaker. Hubert (l) has gained quite a bit on the beat which he began just off Richard's bow.
...

Marc (r) gets set to make it a perfect three Friday firsts for SHADES with runner-up, Nick (l) safely
tucked away to leeward and astern. Well back in 3rd spot is Hubert with his main twisting off far too much.
...

Marc and Al (r) finish in fine style.
...

A 5th for Richard and Michele who had an eventful day that included
720's, a missing mainsheet and a shroud that came loose!!
...

Jim McIntyre gets ready to thread the narrow gap between the dock and the weeds
as he heads for the free post-race beer.
...

Inside or outside, the Lake Eustis SC is a pleasant place just to relax.

This is the way the weather should be in early February!!!!

Ted Benedict helps Ellen Hill with her haul-out.

(l to r) Uncle Al, Wayfarer Man and Marc Bennett rest up after a challenging day.

All things considered, they'd rather be here than at home!!
