For Floridians,
this was a cold wind. ... |

Dick
Rothery admires Joe De Brincat's yacht during the
lunch break. Quite a
neat radio-controlled machine! We then went out for
the afternoon's racing in winds of 8 to 15 knots with
higher gusts. Those used to sailing in the hiking
breezes dominated as Al, Nick and Geoff placed 1-2-3
in both races. An excellent afternoon's racing for Jim
McIntyre and crew, Glenda Libby, who scored a fine 5-4
that were instrumental in winning them the Bob
Brown Memorial Trophy as the Midwinters' Most
Improved crew. It was in fact, a glorious day until

... the
nightmare hit. In a tragic accident, Dick Rothery and
Hubert Dauch were run over by a van that lost control
while they were attaching Hubert's trailer to it.
Blissfully unaware, the Flying Scots in the distance
are still sailing their third race as the LESC parking
lot fills with police and emergency vehicles.

Hubert and
Dick were airlifted to hospital in Orlando where they
clung to life for weeks. At this time, our friend and
fellow Wayfarer,
...Dick Rothery has just passed away. We will miss him and drink to his memory often. Hubert remains in a coma but is now back in Michigan. |
Saturday's
festive dinner was not so festive - especially for us
Wayfarers. But we were very hungry after the
day's racing and appreciated the usual excellent
dinner laid on by our hosts. Most Wayfarers made it a
very early, quiet night as we tried to come to grips
with the horrors of the afternoon. Thanks to Ellen
Hill who provided this record of the Saturday night
activities.

The LESC
Flying Scot Fleet provided fine wine to all of us
sailors. Thanks, gentlemen and ladies!

Some serious
discussion went well with the wine. ... |
