the 2004 Midwinters
Friday: race 3, part 1
photos by Kim Bergevin and Ellen Hill

Relaxing is ...
...

... one of our best talents. Waiting for race 3.
...

Michele and Richard make sure all is set for Friday's finale.
...

Hank and Stan: relaxed but ...
...

... vigilant.
...

Another nice, square line and they're off. This time, Marc Bennett has the helm aboard 3854 with Uncle Al
taking a refresher course in Crewing 101. Note the different pointing angles of the various boats!
...

Marc already has SHADES (3854) looking great. Jim McIntyre (1904) will have to
hurry up and get that main in if he doesn't want to wallow in Marc's backwind.
...

Tacking away early are Joe De Brincat (1115) and Richard Johnson (10139). Marc continues to go left to stay with
both SHADES' closest series rivals: Nick Seraphinoff and Geoff Edwards who each have a 2-3 thus far.
...

Marc has SHADES moving beautifully. "Puff coming," warns Uncle Al.
...

Continuing a long starboard off the start line,
Hank (1395), Hubert (3636) and Geoff (under Hank's boom) are having a close race.
...

Marc (3854) nears the windward mark with a narrow edge over Nick (864).
...

Geoff and Pat looking fine as they near the windward mark. Good practice for the George Washington's Birthday
Regatta where they would win with three straight firsts a couple of weeks later! Well done, Geoff and Pat!!
...

Lovely photos here by Kim Bergevin! Above, a backlit SHADES leads the pack just after rounding the offset mark visible under the end of W3854's boom. Note the spinnaker kindly loaned to Uncle Al and Marc by W864, Nick Seraphinoff!! Meanwhile Geoff (9483) has decided to pass on his spi for now. The Chick'n chute is going up as is Hubert just behind the Johnsons who will have to watch out that Hubert doesn't take their wind and pass them while they are busy hoisting. Joe (1115) is just approaching the offset mark.
...

A glorious sailing day!!
...

Marc Bennett at the helm and Uncle Al at the spinnaker. SHADES continues to lead but ...
...

... Nick (864) and the gang are bringing a puff from astern!!
...

Nick (standing) and Joe look to be in mid-season form!
...

Another puff hits Hubert (l) and Richard (r) as the spinnaker boats begin
to leave behind the non-spinnaker crews like Hank and Stan (centre).
...

Good spinnaker action as ...
...

... Hubert (3636) sits on Richard's wind while Marc (r) and Nick (864) begin to pull away.
...

Joe (helming) and Peter have the Maltese Falcon very nicely balanced here.
