Wayfarer
Midwinters Lake Eustis Sailing Club * February 2-4 , 2007 on shore - 1 pics mostly by Andy Douma, Lori Beehler, Marc Bennett & Uncle Al |
Tuesday morning, January
30th in Oakville just west of Toronto, -10°C, and SHADES is just about ready to be covered by the best ... ... |
... a brand new Hans
Gottschling cover, which will be getting a rough start on
life. ... |
Poised to go, we are just
awaiting the late-afternoon arrival of ... ... |
... Marc Bennett (l) who is armed
with his just renewed British passport. ... |
to Doc Holliday's country and western bar for a late supper. ... |
But first there was the
matter of getting through the lake effect snow between
Buffalo and Erie. Not as bad as the 8+ feet of snow that
would hit Oswego on the SE corner of Lake Ontario a few
days later, but it was enough to slow New York Thruway
traffic down to 30 mph. We tucked ourselves behind the
fastest-moving transport truck ...
... |
... dawdled along ... ... |
... and reached our
hotel in Erie without incident - albeit, a little behind
schedule. The blizzard had fortunately not closed Doc's but Marc was
very disappointed when our burger feast was interrupted
by the announcement that the scheduled line dancing
lessons had been cancelled due to the storm.

0615 hrs on Wednesday
morning. It had snowed all night, but luckily the cold
temperatures had kept the snow light and fluffy, and the wind had blown a lot of the snow off boat and car. ... |
A quick once-over with the
brush and we were soon huddled in the increasing warmth of
the car. With coffee to go to fortify us, we headed off, hoping to ... ... |
... make it to Charlotte,
North Carolina by supper time. ... |
We headed south towards
Pittsburgh on I-79 as ... ... |
... the light of dawn
slowly ... ... |
... crept over the horizon. ... |
The Interstate was mostly
bare and nicely drivable, but it was still pretty snowy
when we exited to ... ... |
... make our first
gas stop a couple of hours later. ... |
... |
A reminder of the need to
drive carefully was a series of transports that had run off the road, one having rolled over and smashed its trailer to pieces. ... |
By just after noon, we were
in West Virginia on I-77. Here there were encouraging
signs: less snow and temperatures not too far below freezing - in fact, perfect weather to have a DQ milkshake! ... |
... |
The only Starbucks (at the
service centre in Beckley, WVA, above) on our way down
to Florida was not to be missed. As the day wore on, we
crossed Virginia and left the snow - a moment that
called for celebration, if only mentally. The beer would
come later. We reached the outskirts of Charlotte just
in time for rush hour, a relatively brisk one, compared
to Toronto's Highway 401. But now the radio was
confirming what we had heard on the Weather Channel the
night before: a severe ice storm was expected to hit the
area early the following morning. Interestingly enough,
there were many trucks out pre-spraying I-77, something
we had not realized could be done to useful effect. We
thus decided that we would proceed for another hour or
two, SE on I-26 to Columbia, South Carolina, which would
be just that little bit closer to the ocean and to sea
level that we might miss the worst of the ice storm.
... |
After a hotel stop in
Columbia that included dinner at a very nice Italian
Restaurant next door, we were underway before dawn,
having wolfed down our complimentary breakfast. Lucky
us! While Richard and Michele, who were leaving their
Charlotte home with the Free Range Chick'n that morning, were
hours getting out of the iced-up Charlotte, all Marc and
I got was some drizzle, which was just nicely enough
rain to rinse off the worst of the road salt from car,
boat and trailer.
... |
It wasn't even Thursday
noon yet when we reached Eustis, and Marc was able to give
the boat, trailer and cover their ... ... |
... annual wash! ... |
Minutes later, we arrived
at the Lake Eustis SC, which ... ... |
... was experiencing
unsettled weather as a ... ... |
... series of showers were
passing through the area Still, with temps in the upper 60's Fahrenheit, we were not complaining! ... |
Butch Minson (r) had already
arrived from Maine, and was hard at work readying W6751 which he was borrowing from John Conrader. ... |
Mike Murto got the free
draft beer up and running, while we did the same for SHADES. Nothing
seemed to have changed from last year, and Marc and I
knew that soon Scott Tillema, Dave Moring and Kevin
Rankin would arrive to help us "set sail with Captain
Morgan" and ship's physician, Dr. Pepper (see prepared picnic
table).
... |
In due time, Richard (and
Michele) were welcomed by Mary Abel and Jim Heffernan (r) as they rolled in
with the Chick'n
... ... |
... which Michele was soon
cossetting with a loving, soapy wash under the watchful
eye of Tony Krauss who had arrived with Mary from North East, Maryland, and who would be borrowing a boat. ... |
Jim and Linda Heffernan
wasted no time getting out to fine-tune their much newer
sails than ... ... |
... last year!!! ... |
After a flight from Ottawa
to Orlando, our very own embodiment of the best of the Wayfarer spirit, Lori Beehler, arrived and greeted Uncle Al. ... |
Before setting sail with
Capt. Morgan, Dave Moring and Kevin Rankin took out Mo
Metcalf's Murphy's Law,
which ... ... |
... Mo was letting them
sail in the Midwinters since he was stuck with a bad cold
in his Atlanta home. ... |
I believe that's Randy
Boekema of LESC (l)
welcoming Lori and my crew, Marc, whose shirt was to become ever more prophetic as the evening wore on. ... |
Always willing to be
helpful, Uncle Al holds down Dave Moring's chair in his
absence, lest the gusting winds blow it away! |
