Our Midwinters attendance record-tieing fleet hangs ...
...

... poised for the start of the 2007 Midwinters just as soon as we're done with the ...
...

... the competitors' briefing. Above, Mike Murto introduces Principal Race Officer, Dave Williams (r).
...

And an attentive group we are, too.
...

The winds don't look like much right now, but are expected to pick up in short order.
...

Someone is already out fishing.
...

The briefing duly completed, we are now ready to head out to the race course.
...

Ted and Randy (r) are set to go as soon as their helms give the word. This, alas, was to be the only day on which we could reasonably wear shorts since the temperatures didn't hit 60°F again until we were hauling out after Sunday's final race.
...

With the Lake Eustis water level down a bit from previous years, navigating past the ends of the docks required even more care than usual this year. In an on-shore breeze, we needed to strike a fine balance: enough board not to drift too much but not so much as to run aground, and by the same token, enough speed to keep the boats from drifting too much, yet nothing excessive!
...

The RC boat sets off. Apparently their motor will be able to push them through the shallow weedy area off the dock's end.
...

No big hurry for Marc (l) and Al who will wait for some of the congestion to clear. Note that it's shorts time for the SHADES team. Marc wisely brought along his full, warm wet gear, while Al gambled by taking only his jacket, a decision he would regret before this three-race day was out.
...

Eddie Kraft (beige slacks) gives Lori some last-minute advice as she prepares to sail Eddie's boat with Scott.
Behind Lori, Kevin Rankin has Mo Metcalf's Murphy's Law all set and is just waiting for helm Dave Moring to appear.
...

Richard Johnson makes hay while the sun shines but his wife, Michele is taking no chances
in case the winds pick up and the clouds roll in. And she was, alas, prophetic.
...

Our photographer du jour is Andy Douma but I don't know the ID of his driver (above).
...

Lunch break after race 1: Dotty Murto is ready to hand out lunches to those who
ordered them, while Sam Montondo (with his wife, Jan) tests the product.
...

After three fine Friday races, Team SHADES, Marc and Al roll up their mainsail under the ...
...

... critical eye of Nick Seraphinoff.
...

Friday night: The majority of our group assembled at the Quarterdeck, a restaurant very
popular for its sea food. Our group being rather large, we had to wait for a while to be seated.
...

But that was no hardship: the evening was lovely, and we had lots of stories to share from the day's exciting racing.

While Mary smiles her lovely smile for the camera, Marc explains one of his theories to Linda Heffernan.
...

Soon we were inside where the discussions ...
...

... could be continued in a more civilized manner, i.e. lubricated by drinks and the prospect of sustenance.
While Marc digs in, the salad-less Uncle Al holds forth to Jim Heffernan, his captive audience, who ...
...

... seems amused by what he's hearing. Lori however, seems more inclined to reserve judgment.
