Saturday morning: Still feeling rather sea-sick from yet another rollicking sail with Captain Morgan the night before, Uncle Al shivers in cool morning breezes and temperatures of less than 50F (< 10C) as Scott demonstrates how to light up when the breeze is really kicking up. Meanwhile, in the background, PRO Dave Williams casts a jaundiced eye at ...

...

Not counting the thunderstorms, it's a lovely morning for a troll - so to speak.
...

Mike Murto explained to us that Lake Eustis is exactly half-way between the Atlantic and the Gulf of Mexico,
and that, as a result, weather systems often collide and fight it out right here.

This line of thunderstorms was expected to pass through within the next few hours, but for the moment ...

Perhaps it was inspiration from Ted above, that caused Marc and me to decide we would sleep for a couple of more hours when our PRO let it be known - unofficially - that they were hoping to start racing at 1 PM and certainly not before that!

1230 hrs: the RC got it perfectly right as we head out in a nice, little northerly breeze for a 1 PM start. Alas, the is the day's only sailing shot. Uncle Al had the camera because Andy had been pressed into service as crew for Butch, but after this shot, Al got too wrapped up in racing and trying to stay warm as the winds picked up, to take the camera out of the aft tank a second time.

Nobody got any post-race shots on Saturday, either. I myself was too busy enjoying Dave Moring's sailing stories and more Captain Morgan to ward off the cold. In fact, Marc and I were enjoying the company of Dave, Kevin, Scott et al so much at the club that we were running seriously late for the 7 PM official Wayfarer Midwinters dinner at Dead River Vic's (now called the Harbor Light Inn???) It was well past 6 by the time we roared out of the club to grab a fast shower at Mike and Dotty's and then rush across town to the dinner. We were only about 15 minutes late, and enjoyed lots of socializing plus great food, but never thought to bring the camera. But I can assure you that a wonderful time was had by all.

Sunday morning, 0813 hrs: Butch gets set to launch for the promised 0930 hrs start to race 6.
...

The weather here looks deceptively benign. There is a cold, gusty offshore breeze from the east,
and the ripples near shore belie that waves created further out by 12 to 15-knot winds, gusting at times to 20+.

Everyone is well bundled up as Heather Hill guides the Team Island Trip  launch.

Looks nice enough, doesn't it? But note how no one is rushing to get out there early! When Marc and I finally left shore at the last acceptable moment, even we worried about the possibility of an unwanted swim as we ran out towards the race course. In fact, we were nervous enough, that Marc suggested that I helm the first race even though it was Marc's turn because then we would be doing the jobs we do best: Al is no longer the ace crew he once was, and Marc's roll tacks could use a bit of work!
