North Bay Wayfarer Weekend Thursday and Friday - 1 photos by Carol Hansman, Andrew Haill, Doug Netherton & Uncle Al |
As Julia and I arrived
on
Thursday evening, we got this lovely view of Callander
Bay just after
making the turn-off to the North Bay YC, where we
dropped off the boat
on our way to checking into a Honeymoon Suite at the ... ... |
... Terrace Suites
across the road and (way) up the hill. ... |
Friday morning arrived
with
a sky that promised lots of cool wind. ... |
We had a lovely,
elevated
view of Callander Bay from ... ... |
... the parking lot of
our
hotel. ... |
And just below
the
hotel,
the old scenic lookout area that we used to pass
coming home from the
Trout Lake regattas is still there. Julia and I
speculated that some of
the boats already out there at this early hour
(0830?) might be entries
for the North Bay YC's Canada Day Race which would
start around noon at
North Bay's government dock on Lake Nipissing, a
good couple of hours
under motor power from the club.
|
After raiding a North
Bay Tim
Horton's for
a breakfast, Julia and I returned to a cool windy
morning at the North
Bay YC. In the middle and up the hill, you can just see
... ... |
... our hotel, a fact
which
I duly noted since it would be a good landmark for the
National Cruise
Race which usually finishes right off the club. ... |
Mike O'Shea
checks out
the
39 knot gusts - a wind
reading that
confirms
that the Canada Day Race is likely to be an event
that will require
good seamanship and lots of hard work. With lots of
relatively
inexperienced Wayfarers in the mix, Uncle Al
suggested we give today's
sailing a miss - a decision greeted with enthusiasm
by Julia who was to
come out of racing retirement today after
a ten-year layoff.
|
Instead, we could all
enjoy
a restful day, which Julia (r) starts off by
catching up on
things with Anne Black on the lovely screened-in
upstairs veranda of
the club (which also doubled for Uncle Al as the smoking
lounge). ... |
Michael Kachkovsky (l),
Kate Linkova and son, Giorgy, set up their tent under
the watchful eye
of Michael's skipper, Fred Black. ... |
Then Fred moves on to
exchange greetings with John and Dolores de Boer who
already have their
"home" all set up. ... |
Julia and I decided to
drive in to North Bay where we eventually located the
government dock
which was a hive of Canada Day activity. ... |
There was even one
Wayfarer
in the parking lot!! ... |
The experienced eye
will
note that these wind patterns on even the sheltered
marina waters
reflect a very healthy breeze - one that today was
gusting above 20
knots. ... |
Outside the marina,
Lake
Nipissing gives ... ... |
... a truer idea of
wind
and ... ... |
... waves that Race participants will need to
deal with in
their 12-mile race: a beam reach south on Lake Nipissing
and then a
dead run east into Callander Bay. ... |
Yep. There'll be no
complaining about lack of wind ... ... |
... today!!! ... |
On the way into town,
Julia
and I had spotted and noted the location of something
even better than
a bar, and while many sailors were slogging through
waves in a cool
breeze, we browsed and bought to our hearts' content. ... |
Meanwhile, Andrew
Haill and
Julie Colbourn (too busy walking the dog to be in this
pic) had arrived
after a 14-hour drive from Thunder Bay. Andrew sets up
his boat while

Sue helps out by
seizing
the jib halyard tail to its wire counterpart. ... |
Marc explains the
benefits
of chocking the mast tightly athwartships at deck level. ... |
Our #1 host, Dave
Hansman,
and Roger Cross (a North Bay YC Farr 27 sailor) are
happy with the
excellent turn-out. ... |
Geoff Edwards (l)
arrives and meets his crew for the weekend, Matt Close. ... |

Kitchener. |
