arrived

Looks like we are all

And some sobering
thoughts from Andrew Haill on the steel board above: -----

Subject: Problem with
centreboard alterations?
Al
Hope
all is well at your end.
Just
the other day I wrote to Dave Hansman on
various items and it
prompted me to again look at the North Bay
regatta photos and
I noted some captions had been added to
them.
Consequently I started to review them all
(appreciating
again the huge amount of work this is...thanks) and
given a recent
event I was rather struck by the picture
of the steel
centreboarded Wayfarer. Perhaps
you could forward the
concern on to Henry Van Brussel who from the
picture caption
apparently owns this boat. From my
impression of the
picture there is nothing to retain the board in
the down
position. This arrangement could get
rather nasty.
As you know, Lightnings are the other
dinghy sailed up here
.... they have steel boards but are also
rigged
with a 'preventer' to hold the board
down.
However a recent capsize experience with an
inadvertent non-use of
the preventer is an indication of the problem
awaiting this
Wayfarer. It would be a shame if a steel board
presumably
intended for increased stability ironically created
a worse
situation. If a board is heavy (and what
metre long plate
of stainless steel isn't?) then it also should
have something to
hold it down and thus out of the case should the
boat capsize.
Otherwise gravity takes over and once
fallen into the case it is
essentially impossible to pull out, unavailable for
self-rescue and a
certain way to a turtled boat and possibly an
unpleasantly long
wait for help. Perhaps Henry has this all
sorted out but it looks
like it is just rigged to assist pulling the heavy
board up.
cheers,
Andrew Haill

A lovely breakfast was
