2005 North Bay Wayfarer Weekend
Sunday: Don Rumble Memorial Series - 5

The lightweight team of Sue and Stephan may well need to ease considerably more main and/or
sail with more of a luff in both main and genoa to keep their boat flat.
...

A puff with a lift is not necessarily an unmixed blessing - as Dave and Carol find out here!
...

Bernie and Henry have Felecia in great upwind form here!
...

Fast reaction from young Brett keeps the spinnaker from becoming a complete sea anchor. If you haven't tried doing this ...
...

... you can't appreciate the amount of strength required to wrestle that water-filled
spinnaker back aboard before the boat sails over it!! Well done, Brett!!!!
...

Uncle Al and Marc have SHADES in top form as they finish.
...

Race 4: John and Dolores check the line.
...

As the final seconds tick away, John (7351) and Dave (282) are about to ...
...

... nail perfect RC boat end starts. Note that Dave is wisely hanging back because John is aiming at the RC boat (where the camera is!!) and will prudently leave no room for Dave to squeeze in.  But the latter has other plans anyway. As soon as ...
...

... he passes the RC boat, he will throw in a quick ...
...

... tack, and be off ...
...

... on port tack in clear air.
...

Just in time for a great puff, in which Dave has ...
...

... luffed up (note the shore) so that Banshee ...
...

... stays beautifully on her "feet".
...

Now they're knocked ...
...

... severely!! As soon as they're sure the knock will stay, they must now tack to the favoured starboard tack. When you're hot, on days when you have a real feel for what the wind is doing, you in fact tack right as the knock hits, without ever bearing away.
...

Quite the gust here as the afternoon sunshine stirs the weather pot.
...

There'll be good action at the near-by leeward mark.
...

Sure enough, Dwight (4606) has managed to sneak inside and move past John.
...

Sue Pilling is off on the favoured starboard tack, while Dave (282) will probably want to
hold port until a tack will leave him in clear air.
...

How many grandmothers do you know who can do this, or perhaps more importantly ...
...

... are even willing to try!!!???
...

Andrew and Julie hike nicely as they cross on port astern of Fred.  Still a lot of twist in that main: sheeting in harder would make Njord point higher, and it looks like this athletic crew could hike even harder to cope with the additional heeling forces sheeting in would create.
...

Our closely bunched fleet looks spectacular on the run before the final beat to the finish.
...

Our only picture from race 5 shows Andrew and Julie again - this time demonstrating self-rescue 101.
